The Jinx - modernised
Theodore (Ted) Annemann arguably one of the most important names in mentalism, produced a magazine called The Jinx between 1934 and 1941. The magazine has been called one of the greatest magic magazines ever published. It contains a wealth of magic and mentalism.
Being published back in the 30’s meant none of the desktop publishing facilities we have these days. And therefore the facsimile reprints are often hard to read.
Two people have taken on the task of bringing this important magazine into the modern day.
Julien Losa over at The Jinx Experience who I have been supporting since day one of the project, has been retyping and laying out the magazine to a more modern standard, no more having to try and read the old type, or skip between pages of the magazine to read the end of a trick! It brings a clean, crisp modern look to the content and allows easy reading and referencing.
On the back of Julien’s project Jay Jennings has created Jinx Navigator an iOS (soon to be Android as well) app that contains a searchable database of articles from the magazine. It allows searches by keyword, by tag or just browsing by issue, he has also just added the original PDF articles so you can see the original article in context, and also made the app free, meaning you can take your own notes, add articles as favourites etc. this is a brilliant add on to Julien’s project to make this important magazine into a modern resource available in your pocket.
The last thing to mention if you are looking for a guide or companion to The Jinx about 15 years ago Craig Conley, Gordon Meyer and Frederick Turner published their The Jinx Companion which is a culmination of their year long study of the magazine, and their own personal notes and thoughts, it is available as an Apple Book so you can read it on your iPad or you can get a printed copy through Amazon.
